Organic food is becoming extremely popular. Organic farming grew by 12% last year.

Even regular supermarkets have a huge choice of organic products. What are the benefits of these organic products?

What is organic food?

We speak of organic food when the producers of the food take into account as much as possible the environment and animal welfare.

No chemical-synthetic pesticides are used but natural means. This means that also occurs in nature.

In addition, natural enemies, such as the ichneumon wasp, are used against harmful insects and diseases. Genetic modification is not permitted.

In most cases, these natural pesticides are safer for humans and the environment but make no mistake.

This is not always the case. Heavily toxic molecules also occur in nature. Uranium and arsenic are good examples.

But fungi, plants, and mushrooms can also be toxic. These can make you quite ill and in some cases are even deadly.

Something can be organic, but that does not mean that it is also ecologically sound.

  • Pyrethrin

One substance used in organic farming is, for example, pyrethrin. This is a plant extract and neurotoxin that acts on the nervous system of all insects.

The substance is less harmful to birds and mammals than synthetic agents but is lethal to insects.

Since in the last 30 years more than 75% of insects have disappeared and we have to save them, this is not, in my opinion, a remedy you should use.

Pyrethrin breaks down quickly under the influence of light. This leaves no harmful residue in the soil, which is the case with synthetic pesticides.

  • Spinosad

Spinosad is also used in organic farming. It is a pesticide used to control beetles and caterpillars, among other things.

The agent is not toxic to certain insects, but it is toxic to earthworms, fish, and aquatic organisms.

It is even highly toxic to bees. The pesticide is used in the cultivation of apple and pear trees, strawberries, tomatoes, vegetables, and ornamental plants, among others.

For humans, the health risk is minimal, according to the WHO.

  • Copper and sulfur.

These two natural pesticides have been banned in some countries because they are very bad for soil life, but they are still used as pesticides in the rest of the EU.

Copper is used in the cultivation of potatoes and fruits as a bactericide and fungicide, among other things.

It is also used when mildew is threatening in rainy wine regions. So it could just be that there is copper residue in your foreign organic wine.

Sulfur is used in fruit growing and is also fungicidal. In addition, it fights ticks and mites. While these are natural remedies, they can be harmful if used in excess.

(1) Why do organic foods cost more? And are they healthier?

Organics are more expensive.

According to a report published this month by the Dutch Consumers Association, organic products sold in conventional supermarkets are 63% more expensive than private labels.

Inorganic grocery stores, products are 75% more expensive.

This may seem expensive, they said, but five years ago these products were 100% more expensive, so organic products are relatively cheaper and more affordable.

A bunch of organic bananas will often save you one or two times as much, while an organic chicken breast will cost you at least three times as much.

If you compare organic products to A-brand products, the latter is often cheaper. In general, organic products are becoming cheaper and more common.

(2) Why is organic food more expensive?

Organic products are much more labor-intensive and the yield per acre is much lower. No artificial fertilizers and synthetic pesticides may be used.

Because the yield is lower, the cost of logistics and marketing per product is higher.

The demand for organic products is lower than for the regular varieties, which makes them more expensive.

Organic animals are given much more space and live longer. As a result, they eat more food in their lifetime and that makes it more expensive.

Organic Eggs:

Many people prefer to choose free-range eggs. The term “free-range eggs” means that the hens are outside all day.

This name can be misleading because free-range hens are not allowed to roam freely and are not exposed to sunlight.

They also have no distracting materials and are not demanding of feed. Of course, free-range chickens are exposed to daylight.

However, organic chickens are preferred because they have more space to move around, are not distracted by extraneous material, and eat organic feed.

The latter is very important. Human food needs are high, but animal food needs are much lower. For example, the animal feed may contain more pesticide residues.

With a moderate amount of food, toxic substances can be reintroduced through the animal.

(3) Are organic foods really organic?

Why are organic stores more expensive than conventional supermarkets?

The organic sector is growing so fast that it is difficult to do all the inspections every year, but it works very well.

Organic supermarkets go a step further than conventional supermarkets and take care of people, animals, and the environment.

They invest in biodiversity, a free choice of varieties of vegetables, and in improving animal welfare.

On paper, these products meet the requirements for organic products, but there is often still room for improvement when it comes to the environment, working conditions, and animal life.

 (4) Organic products may contain pesticides.

Some people believe that organically grown crops do not contain pesticides. This is frequently correct, but not always.

Some pesticides are permitted in organic farming, but chemical pesticides are not.

This is a big step forward because conventional pesticides have been linked by researchers to hormonal imbalances, cancer, and damage to the nervous system.

Fortunately, in Europe, 99.3% of organic products are pesticide-free or within safe limits.

If 95% of the ingredients are organic, the product can be called organic.

This means that even an organic product may contain 5% non-organic ingredients that may or may not contain pesticides. So make sure your product is 100% organic.

  • Organic Bear Seeds.

Organic does not always mean healthy. You can often find organic unhealthy foods such as chips, cookies, and candy, but they are not good for you.

Organic sugar can also lead to diabetes. Even if you go to an organic grocery store, you may come home with processed foods that are bad for you.

In conclusion.

Finally, the question is, organic always better than non-organic?

Tough question, tough answer.

What I do know now is that I have to clean all my fruits and vegetables thoroughly before I eat them.

By default, I remove as many pesticides as possible from my fruits and vegetables anyway.

Until recently, however, I never did this with the organic variety, because it did not seem necessary to me.

My idea of organic food was always that the food is unsprayed and therefore a lot healthier. That was always the main consideration for buying organic food.

But that’s not the case. So organic doesn’t always mean it’s better, good for us.

Organic food is also sprayed with pesticides that are sometimes just as toxic or even more toxic than synthetic pesticides.

Unfortunately, we can never check that, because, of course, nowhere is it stated what it was sprayed with and how toxic or non-toxic it is. So how can we be sure that we are making the right choice?

Organic foods may contain more antioxidants than conventional foods. However, the evidence for this is divergent.

It is claimed that eating organic food reduces the intake of artificial additives, hormones, and antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

Your choice of organic is based on your own unique interests and values.

According to the website The Ideal Bite, organic food contains at least 50% more nutrients than the non-organic version of the same product.

Depleted soil is the main reason for this decrease in nutrients.

This means that you need to eat less organic food to get the vitamins and minerals you need, which in turn outweighs the higher cost of organic food.
